About: As part of a multidisciplinary team, I contributed to Cat-thulhu, a single player game created in Unreal Engine 5 where you play as a cat fishing to feed their village. My main responsibilities were in level design and UI functionality, with additional support in game design.

Contributions: Game Designer/Level Designer

Engine and tools: Unreal Engine 5.4

Timeframe: 8 weeks

Features

  • Core Gameplay Loop Design, centred around underwater exploration, fish collection, and returning resources to the boat to support village progression.

  • Level and Space Design, creating underwater areas that balance exploration, visibility, and navigation while guiding players toward objectives.

  • Risk–Reward Gameplay Structure, encouraging players to venture further for greater rewards while managing oxygen, positioning, and escape routes.

  • Dynamic Threat Avoidance, incorporating the sea monster Cat-thulu as an intermittent hazard to create tension and disrupt player routines.

  • Player Flow and Readability, ensuring objectives, hazards, and traversal routes remain clear despite the challenges of underwater movement.

  • Collaboration in Unreal Engine 5, working closely with programmers and artists to integrate mechanics, level layouts, and visual feedback.

  • Iterative Playtesting and Refinement, adjusting pacing, threat frequency, and level layout based on feedback to improve player experience.
